Graduate F-1/J-1 Visa Student Orientations
Graduate Students on an F-1 or J-1 student visa will be required to attend a variety of orientations.
The Fall 2023 International F-1/J-1 Student Orientation will be held in two parts, both as an online course and an in-person meeting. This orientation is for F-1 and J-1 degree-seeking students who will be joining UWM in-person for the fall 2023 semester.
You are expected to complete both parts of this orientation.

The course is being held through Canvas, which is UWM’s online course system.

The online course is self-paced and must be completed by September 18, 2023.

You will be automatically enrolled in the online course after you have completed your Arrival Check-In.
F-1/J-1 Student Orientation Part 2: In-Person Meeting
- Date for Graduate Students with an Assistantship: Thursday, August 24, 2023
- Date for Graduate Students without an Assistantship: Thursday, August 31, 2023
- Time: Exact times will be communicated closer to the event date.
- Location: Exact location will be communicated closer to the event date.
- Lunch will be provided.
- Registration is OPEN and available in your ISSS Connect portal.
- Once registration is open, you will need to login to your ISSS Connect portal and navigate to the DOCUMENTS & REQUESTS tab; you will find the registration as an icon on the right side of the page.
- REGISTRATION is required.
The UWM Graduate School hosts an orientation for new students. For more information about their orientation, visit the Graduate School website.
Most Graduate Students are required to attend a Department Orientation hosted by your academic department. To learn more about possible department orientations, contact your academic department.
All Graduate Students who have accepted an Assistantship offer may be required to attend an orientation for the assistantship. Assistantships include Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships and Fellowships. If you have accepted an assistantship, contact your department for information regarding orientation and training requirements.
